Pickleball Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Answers to your most burning pickleball questions
What is pickleball?
Pickleball is a paddle sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong.
Why is it called pickleball?
Pickleball was named either after Joel Pritchard’s family dog, Pickles, who loved chasing the ball, or after the term “pickle boat,” referring to a crew of leftover rowers—a nod to the mix of sports that inspired the game.
How do I choose the right paddle?
Look for a paddle that feels comfortable in your hand, offers the right weight (lighter for quicker reactions, heavier for more power), and has a suitable grip size.
Materials like graphite, fiberglass, or composite each provide different blends of control and power, so if you can, try a few before buying. Start with something mid-range—you can always upgrade once you’ve found your groove.
What are the basic rules of pickleball?
Serve underhand from behind the baseline, sending the ball diagonally. After the serve, both sides let the ball bounce once before volleying.
Avoid “volleying” (hitting the ball midair) while standing in the seven-foot Non-Volley Zone (often called the Kitchen). Scoring goes to 11 (win by 2), and only the serving team can score.
Enjoy the fun, the friendly pace, and the sense of community on the court!
